About the Lowland Leader Assessment

The Lowland Leader Assessment is the final step towards becoming a qualified Lowland Leader, accredited by Mountain Training. This course is for women who have already completed Lowland Leader training and have gained sufficient experience to demonstrate safe, competent leadership in lowland environments.

Delivered by Black Girls Hike, this assessment is women-only and female-led, creating a supportive, professional space where candidates can demonstrate their skills with confidence.

This is a formal assessment, not a training course. You must first complete your Lowland Leader Training.

  • Over two days (16 hours minimum contact time), candidates will be assessed on their ability to:

    • Plan and lead lowland walks safely

    • Navigate accurately using map and compass

    • Manage groups effectively and inclusively

    • Identify and manage hazards

    • Make sound leadership decisions

    • Respond appropriately to incidents and emergencies

    • Demonstrate environmental awareness and good practice

Assessment is practical and scenario-based, with candidates taking turns leading walks and responding to leadership situations.

  • At the end of the assessment, candidates will receive one of the following outcomes:

    • Pass – You meet the required standard

    • Defer – You show potential but need more experience

    • Fail – The required standard has not been met

Feedback will be given to support your development.

  • This assessment is for women who are ready to demonstrate competence, not those still learning core skills.

You should already feel confident with:

    • Navigation in lowland terrain

    • Leading groups independently

    • Making leadership decisions in real situations

  • This is a high-demand, small-group assessment. Places are limited.

Before booking, please ensure you meet all entry requirements.

After booking, candidates will be asked to provide evidence of eligibility before their place is confirmed.

  • £250 per person

    This reflects:

    • Small group assessment (max 4 candidates)

    • Accredited Mountain Training delivery

    • High assessor responsibility

    • Detailed feedback and reporting
